The MelBorn 2011 season will comprise the work of the writers who submit longer plays for consideration with a view to being selected as an MWT Resident Writer.
Resident Writers:
Resident Writers will pay a membership fee of $250 for the year in which they participate in the programme. The funds generated by these fees will provide a seeding fund for the season with the aim that the writers would recoup their fee in the outcome of the season’s profit share arrangements.
- They will receive all of the benefits of the general members as well as having their work produced as part of the MelBorn 2011 season.
Resident Writers will be selected based on the following process.
- A call for submissions for plays between 45 and 90 minutes in length.
- These submissions should include:
- The play being submitted
- Any dramaturgical reports
- The name of a director willing to direct the production for MelBorn
- A signed acknowledgment that on selection the writer agrees to pay the Resident Writer’s Membership fee of $250(note: a pro forma application form will be available on the MWT site)
- An established independent theatre dramaturge will then be paid to make an assessment of the plays and select the MelBorn program for production. The plays will all be assessed without author and director details and those selected will have a report written by the dramaturge to outline why the play has been chosen.
MelBorn:
The 6-week MelBorn season will then be programmed, the number of plays in the season depending on the assessments of the dramaturge. An example of how the season may work is as follows: Week 1 & 2 – 1 x 90 minute piece Week 3 & 4 – 2x 45-minute pieces Week 5 & 6 – 1 x 75 minute piece – 1 x 30 minute piece.
We believe that this approach enables the MWT to return to its original ethos of script development and the model we propose has synergies with those found in other well reputed independent theatre organisations we have researched, including the New Dramatists, Playwrights Foundation, and Chicago Dramatists in the US, and Tarragon Theatre and Finborough Theatre in the UK.
Short & Sweet and Short But Not So Sweet are just two examples of the production opportunities for short plays and we are committed to supporting our members in preparing their plays for entry into these festivals. We plan to have one night during the year dedicated to 10-minute plays as well as continuing our regular monologue nights.
